Both P1 Motorsport drivers did well already in the morning’s qualifying where Grubmueller secured 7th and Charouz 9th positions for the afternoon’s race. Both made a good start and each gained one position on lap 1. The race was later affected by safety car on lap 5 after crash of another competitor. The race was restarted three laps later and unfortunately the Austrian driver lost several positions during next two laps and found himself down on 11th.
The opposite was true for Charouz who moved up. The Czech official reserve driver of the Renault F1 Team was seventh at the end of lap 8 and gained another place after lap 14 when Anton Nebylitsky got drive through penalty.
Charouz was under pressure from Spaniard Albert Costa on lap 19 and the Spaniard found a way ahead. The Prague driver controlled seventh under the flag and equaled his best result which he had got in home race at Brno.
Walter Grubmueller did not follow promising qualifying in the race and finished 12th which means he missed points.
Jan Charouz: „I am happy with today. I was a bit unlucky in the qualifying because I did just one lap on the first new set of tyres and the qualifying was red flagged. It was good on the second set and I secured fifth row. The start went well and I gained one place and another one after the restart. It was difficult race because the tyres were quickly destroyed in the heat and the heat took its toll also on drivers. The car oversteered quite a lot at the end and I did a small mistake and Costa capitalized. I am still happy to get points and hope it will be similar tomorrow.”
Walter Grubmueller jun.: “I had a reasonable start and I was running sixth for quite a long time. Then was safety car period and Russian Nebylitsky overtook me but he went outside the track and was penalized afterwards. Unfortunately I lost my rhythm and fall down to 11th. I lost another place later after Mansell’s crash because I had to avoid his car and finally finished 12th. It is pity because sixth place and important points were close. Now I have to keep focus in the second race.”
