In a way it was a Deja Vu for Jan Charouz in Hungary as the race weekend of the Formula Renault 3.5 was very similar to the one at Brno. He was again 7th in the first race and then was in the centre of attention of the TV cameras in the second race. The official Renault F1 reserve drive was fighting hard and got close to points.
Charouz did a good start and where he improved from 16th to 13th. The P1 Motorsport team did a great job in the pits during the mandatory stop. Charouz was 9th after all drivers pitted and he put in a fascinating move on Brandon Hartley. Charouz gained seven places on the track which is infamous for lack of overtaking spots. The Czech quickly caught Jake Rosenzweig who was eight. He tried to overtake but a small mistake was enough to spun and drop to 12th.
Charouz was still in a fighting spirit and three laps later overtook Nelson Panciatici and soon was pressuring Stefano Coletti for 10th. There was a contact during the fight for the last point position which damaged Charouz’s tyre. The Czech had to pit for the second time and finished at the back. His performance however did not disappoint and once again proved that he has confidence to fight with anybody and is able to prepare a good move on rivals.
Jan’s team-mate Walter Grubmueller jun. finished 11th on Sunday, just behind the points.
Jan Charouz: “Of course, it is pity that I did not get points but I definitely gained a lot of experience. Everybody says that it is almost impossible to overtake at Hungaroring but I was quite successful. I did two mistakes, one when I was pushing Rosenyweig and spun. I lost point scoring position as a result but managed to overtake Panciatici and was in fight for points again. I was trying to overtake Coletti but there was a contact and my tyre exploded. I am still happy with yestreday’s points and also I was close today.”
Walter Grubmueller jun.: “I changed tyres very early and I did several mistakes. I was not as aggressive as I should have been at the entry to the pitlane which is at a corner and there is also quite a long straight before the speed limit and also there I lost some time. The pitstop itself was good, the P1 Motorsport guys did a great jo b but I still lost four places due my mistakes. Unfortunately it means that I did not get any points here.“
